Ancestral Roots General FAQs

  • Ancestral Roots is a holistic care practice supporting individuals and families through life’s sacred transitions.

Rooted in ancestral wisdom, compassionate care, and community support, Ancestral Roots offers doula services, Reiki, herbal wellness, spiritual support, and educational experiences designed to nurture the whole person — body, mind, heart, and spirit.

Our work centers pregnancy, postpartum, grief, healing, identity shifts, and the many moments of transformation that shape our lives. We believe care should be culturally mindful, accessible, emotionally supportive, and deeply human.

At its core, Ancestral Roots exists to help people feel held, supported, informed, and connected throughout every stage of becoming.

  • Ancestral Roots welcomes individuals and families of all backgrounds who are seeking compassionate, holistic, and culturally mindful support.

Our work intentionally centers Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (BIPOC), LGBTQIA+ individuals and families, single parents, caregivers, and communities that have historically experienced barriers to affirming and accessible care.

We strive to create supportive spaces where people feel seen, respected, informed, and cared for as whole human beings — honoring the connection between body, mind, spirit, culture, identity, and lived experience.

All are welcome here with compassion, dignity, and without judgment.

  • Ancestral Roots welcomes clients of all spiritual, religious, cultural, and non-religious backgrounds. Our work is rooted in compassionate, holistic support and honors each individual’s personal beliefs, traditions, and comfort level.

  • No. Ancestral Roots provides holistic wellness, educational, emotional, and spiritual support services and does not replace licensed medical, psychiatric, therapeutic, or emergency care.

We encourage clients to maintain relationships with qualified healthcare providers and are happy to work alongside existing care teams when appropriate. • No, they are different—but beautifully complementary.

A birth doula is a non-medical support person who provides emotional, physical, and spiritual care throughout pregnancy, labor, and immediately after birth. At Ancestral Roots, our doula care centers your voice, your choices, and your sacred birthing experience. We offer advocacy, comfort techniques, education, and an unwavering presence.

A midwife, on the other hand, is a trained healthcare professional who provides clinical care during pregnancy, labor, and birth—including monitoring vitals, catching the baby, and handling medical procedures when needed.

Think of the midwife as your medical provider.
Think of the doula as your guide, support system, and birthkeeper.

Together, we create a fuller circle of care.

  • A postpartum doula is a non-medical support person who nurtures the birthing person, baby, and family during the tender weeks (and sometimes months) after birth. At Ancestral Roots, our postpartum care is rooted in rest, nourishment, and village-style support.

    We offer:

    • Emotional support + space to process your birth story

    • Newborn care education and gentle guidance

    • Infant feeding support (chest/breast/bottle)

    • Light meal prep + herbal remedies for healing

    • Support with household tasks to ease your load

    • Affirmation, grounding, and ancestral care

Our goal is to help you feel held, seen, and honored as you transition into new parenthood. You deserve to be cared for, too.

  • A death doula, also known as an end-of-life doula, provides compassionate emotional, spiritual, and practical support to individuals and families navigating death, dying, grief, and transition.

At Ancestral Roots, end-of-life care is approached with gentleness, dignity, cultural reverence, and deep compassion. Support may include emotional companionship, legacy and vigil planning, advance care discussions, spiritual support, grief support, resource guidance, and creating space for meaningful and supported transitions.

We also hold space for tender and often overlooked forms of grief, including child loss, miscarriage, stillbirth, abortion-related bereavement, and reproductive loss. Care is offered without judgment and with deep respect for each individual’s lived experience and healing journey.

Our philosophy honors death as a sacred part of the human experience and seeks to help individuals and loved ones feel informed, supported, and cared for throughout the process.

Support for beloved pets and animal companions during end-of-life transition is also offered with the same compassion, presence, and care.

  • Because planning for your death is really about living with intention.

Death isn’t just a medical event—it’s a sacred transition. Making your wishes known now ensures that your voice, values, and legacy are honored when the time comes, whether that’s decades away or sooner than expected.

At Ancestral Roots, we see deathwork as a form of radical self-love and community care. Preparing early:

    • Eases the burden on your loved ones

    • Clarifies what you want for your body, your care, your spirit

    • Creates space for ritual, legacy, and healing

    • Helps you live more fully—because you’ve made peace with the inevitable

You don’t need to be old, sick, or in crisis to begin. In fact, the best time is while you feel grounded, clear, and empowered.

We’re here to guide you every step of the way—with tenderness, cultural reverence, and respect for your pace.

  • Reiki (pronounced ray-key) is a gentle, hands-on (or distance) energy healing practice that promotes balance, relaxation, and emotional well-being. Rooted in Japanese tradition, Reiki channels universal life force energy to support your body’s natural ability to heal.

At Ancestral Roots, Reiki is offered in a way that honors your spiritual and ancestral connection. Whether you're holding grief, feeling stuck, recovering from illness, or simply in need of peace, Reiki can help realign your energy and restore harmony.

During a session, you may experience:

    • Deep relaxation or meditative calm

    • Emotional release or clarity

    • Tingling, warmth, or energetic shifts

    • A sense of grounding, peace, or renewal

Reiki is safe for all ages and stages of life. Sessions are available in-person, live distance, or recorded with a custom write-up.

You don’t have to carry it all alone—let energy do some of the work.

  • Reiki is energy, and energy knows no bounds. With distance Reiki, we schedule a time for you to receive, and I send healing energy to your energetic field. You can choose a live session via video or receive a recorded session and write-up for reflection at your own pace.

  • Spiritual life coaching is a heart-centered offering that helps you align with your purpose, tap into ancestral guidance, and navigate life transitions with clarity. Whether you're feeling stuck, seeking deeper meaning, or want to reclaim your power—we journey together.

  • Yes. All herbal products are created with natural, high-quality, intentionally sourced ingredients. I always recommend reviewing ingredient lists and consulting with your healthcare provider if you are pregnant, nursing, or managing a medical condition.

  • Absolutely. I love co-creating custom herbal blends or ritual kits for your needs. Whether it's a spiritual bath, grief support, or energy protection, I can craft something unique to your journey.

  • Ancestral Roots is committed to making compassionate, holistic care as accessible as possible while also honoring the sustainability of this work.

Reduced-rate or sliding scale services may be offered on a limited basis for individuals and families experiencing financial hardship, life transitions, medical challenges, caregiving responsibilities, or other extenuating circumstances.

Sliding scale rates are determined collaboratively based on availability, the type of support requested, and each client’s individual situation. Because availability is limited, sliding scale services cannot be guaranteed for all offerings or requests.

If cost is a barrier to receiving care, clients are encouraged to reach out to discuss available options prior to booking.

  • Ancestral Roots does not directly participate with private insurance plans and is unable to bill insurance companies on a client’s behalf.

However, some clients may be eligible for partial or full reimbursement for doula or wellness services through their insurance provider, Flexible Spending Account (FSA), or Health Savings Account (HSA).

Upon written request, Ancestral Roots can provide an itemized receipt for services rendered. Receipts are typically issued after services are completed, as they must include all dates of service. Please allow up to one week for processing.

    Please note:
    • A receipt does not guarantee reimbursement
    • Coverage eligibility varies by insurance provider and benefit plan
    • Some insurance or benefit programs may require a “Letter of Medical Necessity” from your healthcare provider
    • Ancestral Roots is unable to provide Letters of Medical Necessity

Clients are encouraged to contact their insurance provider, FSA, or HSA administrator directly to understand their specific coverage requirements, reimbursement policies, and restrictions prior to booking services.

  • Yes. Ancestral Roots currently accepts eligible Medicaid clients in Washington, DC and Maryland for qualifying doula and perinatal support services.

Coverage availability, approved services, reimbursement, and authorization requirements may vary depending on your Medicaid plan, managed care organization (MCO), eligibility status, and the specific services requested.

Clients may be asked to provide:
    • Active Medicaid insurance information
    • Managed care organization details
    • Referral or authorization information if required by their plan
    • Intake paperwork and consent forms

Whenever possible, Ancestral Roots will assist clients in understanding the Medicaid billing and approval process. However, final determinations regarding eligibility and coverage are made by Medicaid and/or the client’s insurance provider.

If a requested service is not covered, denied, exceeds approved coverage limits, or falls outside Medicaid-approved services, the client may choose to continue services privately at the agreed-upon rate.

Questions about eligibility or coverage are always welcome prior to booking.
